WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 27, 2023 – AI Squared, the low-code AI integration platform company that makes it easy to integrate machine learning into web-based applications, kicks off its pilot summer internship program in conjunction with a federal agency. The six-week program provides real-world experience solving federal problems and exposure to tech entrepreneurship.
“One of the main reasons for providing this opportunity for the students is that there were none like this when we were students, so we felt the importance to provide them with an opportunity that was not afforded to us to (1) boost their resume, (2) gain real-world project experience, and (3) receive mentorship from some of the best industry and federal tech experts,” said Benjamin Harvey, Ph.D. CEO of AI Squared.
Hacking For Intelligence (H4I) is a curriculum that trains students to solve emerging data science problems for federal agencies. Nearly 30 interns attend weekly H4I classes taught by technical professionals and are trained to solve a series of problem sets including: Automated Policy Engine, Data Mesh Technology, Large Language Model API, AI Models for Cyber Defense, AI Models for Recommendation, and Services Security. Mentors meet with the interns and provide guidance while conducting customer discovery research. Interns also attend weekly mentor meetings to report status updates. The internship program was made possible through the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between Bowie State University, North Carolina A&T University, and AI Squared and a federal agency.
The unique dual-focused internship program offers experience in both the federal space, as well as the tech startup world. A series of AI Squared activities are planned providing technical and professional development opportunities. Harvey teaches data science classes introducing python and Large Language Models to interns. Further, AI Squared senior leaders host Ask Me Anything meetings offering interns an inside view of executive and founder life at a rapid-pace tech startup. Interns also attend Listen & Learn sessions with the engineering team at AI Squared, where they observe sprint set ups and retroactive sprint meetings.
Organized to support a diverse pool of interns, the internship program consists primarily of computer science majors, with a small percentage of non-technical majors. Intern classifications vary from incoming college freshmen to graduate students, and they attend Bloomsburg University, University of North Florida, College of Southern Maryland, Towson University, in addition to NC A&T and Bowie State University. The internship program concludes with a presentation on August 18.
Since launching, AI Squared has successfully secured contracts with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, National Security Agency, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, US Department of Defense and the US Air Force, as well as a Philadelphia-based top financial services company. Backed by venture capital firms NEA and Ridgeline Ventures, AI Squared was also awarded four Small Business Innovation Research grants from the US Department of Defense for its breakthrough technology. AI Squared’s remarkable merit was deemed by the US Federal Government as an innovative company that is ripe with potential to continue stimulating technological advancement and innovation.
The trailblazer tech startup also earned recognition in leading media outlets for outstanding contributions in the AI space, these include Washington Business Journal’s Startups to Watch in 2023, DC Inno’s Fire Awards 2022, AI Magazine’s Top 10 Startups, CRN’s the Top 10 Hottest AI Startup Companies of 2022, Technical.ly’s Top 20 DC Companies to Keep Your Eye on 2023, CIO Review’s Most Promising Low Code No Code Platform Solutions Provider 2023.
